Global efforts to reduce carbon emissions are gaining momentum, with electrification in the transportation sector driving a significant surge in the number of new energy vehicles. Meanwhile, the emergence of innovative materials is creating favorable conditions for the widespread adoption of these eco-friendly cars. As a next-generation material boasting unique physical and chemical properties, diamond is poised to play a key role in advancing and enhancing the performance of new energy vehicles.
IGBT Power Module's Next-Generation Cooling Material—Diamond Heat Sink Sheets
The most critical component in the motor-drive system of new-energy vehicles is the IGBT. The power conductive terminals of IGBT modules used in electric vehicles need to handle large currents of several hundred amperes, placing high demands on both electrical and thermal conductivity. To significantly enhance IGBT power density, cooling performance, and long-term reliability, an efficient thermal management solution is particularly critical.

Increased Application of Diamond Tools in the Automotive Industry
In recent years, with the widespread adoption of lightweight materials—such as aluminum alloys and composite materials—in the automotive manufacturing industry, diamond tools (PCD) have demonstrated clear advantages in machining these materials. PCD tools are crafted by sintering polycrystalline diamond tips onto a hard alloy substrate under high temperature and pressure. This process combines diamond’s exceptional properties—like its ultra-high hardness, outstanding thermal conductivity, low friction coefficient, minimal thermal expansion, weak affinity for both metals and non-metals, high elastic modulus, lack of cleavage planes, and isotropic behavior—while also leveraging the superior strength and durability of hard alloys.

Diamond quantum sensors can extend the driving range of electric vehicles by 10%.
Accurately predicting the remaining driving range of electric vehicles is challenging, as current battery current sensors struggle to provide precise estimates of battery charge levels. This is because the peak current in EV batteries can easily reach hundreds of amperes, while the average current typically hovers around just 10 amps. Unfortunately, most conventional sensors, when designed to handle such high dynamic ranges, lack the necessary precision—often falling short by several tens of milliamperes. As a result, the state-of-charge can only be estimated with an approximate margin of about 10%, leading to inefficient battery usage overall.

Diamond quantum sensors made from diamonds are being applied to new-energy vehicles, offering a current measurement range of ±1,000 A with an accuracy of 10 mA. These sensors can effectively reduce the onboard battery capacity of electric vehicles and improve energy efficiency—by minimizing weight, for instance—leading to a significant decrease in CO₂ emissions within the transportation sector. 2 Emissions reductions that support global energy conservation, emission cuts, and sustainable green development.
Diamond Coating
Diamond coating refers to the combination of metal tools with a diamond film. With advancements in technology, diamond-coating technology continues to innovate and improve, leading to its effective application in industries such as automotive, aerospace, metal components, and cutting tools. For instance, incorporating nanodiamonds into automotive coatings for toughening and reinforcement significantly enhances the impact resistance of the coating film.
Diamond powers electric vehicles
Scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have published a study in Applied Physics Letters, proposing the use of diamonds as ultrawide-bandgap semiconductors to more efficiently power grids, locomotives, and even electric vehicles.

In short, diamonds have vast potential for application in the new energy vehicle industry, and as related technologies continue to advance, their full potential will be further unlocked.
