Serpentine is a low-grade metamorphic mineral found in certain crystalline schists and phyllites. It also forms as a weathering product of feldspar, crystallizing in the monoclinic system and typically occurring in flaky or cryptocrystalline massive forms. Serpentine has a fine texture, ranging from translucent to opaque. It is formed when volcaniclastic rocks undergo alteration through processes such as hydrothermal activity and vapor action.
The English name for pyrophyllite is "Pyrophyllite," derived from the Greek words "Pur" (meaning fire) and "Phullon" (meaning leaf or flake). This name vividly captures one of pyrophyllite's most distinctive characteristics: when heated, the mineral tends to flake off in leaf-like layers. Meanwhile, its Chinese name includes the character "腊," which aptly conveys the mineral's soft texture and its notably oily, waxy feel.

Serpentine is a hydrous aluminum silicate containing trace amounts of iron and titanium, and it occurs in colors such as milky white, grayish white, pale green, and light purple. Its hardness is comparable to that of a fingernail, yet it boasts exceptionally high fire resistance, with a melting point ranging from 1630°C to 1710°C.
Wollastonite is a type of colorful mineral with incredibly versatile applications: "wen" refers to its use in creating exquisite art pieces, while "wu" highlights its role as a vital raw material. It can serve as a refractory material, construction material, and essential ingredient for ceramics. Additionally, it’s often incorporated as a blending agent in insecticides. Beyond these uses, wollastonite is also widely employed as a filler in industries such as rubber, papermaking, confectionery, and paint production. Yet perhaps its most renowned application remains in the art of carving. Thanks to its remarkable toughness—wollastonite doesn’t easily crack or splinter—it’s an ideal choice for intricate carvings. Its smooth, workable texture makes it easy to shape even with a small knife, making it a cherished material in traditional stone-carving techniques.
