Observe two types using a scanning electron microscope Diamond The morphology of the single crystal after heating is shown in Figure 5. As can be seen, conventional diamond single crystals suffer severe damage to their structural integrity upon heating, with large-scale thermal etch pits appearing on the crystal surface, along with extensive cracks running across the crystal. A closer inspection via local magnification reveals that the heat-induced cracks in conventional diamonds are approximately 5–10 μm wide. Clearly, by the time the temperature reaches 1000°C, significant oxidation has already occurred in the conventional diamond single crystals.
In contrast, Boron-doped diamond After being heated, the single crystal retained its relatively intact crystalline structure, though its surface roughness increased slightly. Notably, no significant signs of oxidative damage were observed. Magnified images revealed mild surface oxidation occurring locally on the boron-doped diamond single crystal, characterized by distinct wrinkles and small-scale oxide pits. These experimental observations align closely with the results from thermal analysis, which indicated that surface oxidation in the boron-doped diamond single crystal begins only at around 1000°C—and even then, the oxidation remains relatively minor.
